I've had a layout archive called Artless for years, but it was more a thumbnailed index of old images rather than an informative look at my artistic history. It's been through a few incarnations and has never been very frequently updated.
I chose the name sometime in my Hamlet phase, with the line "more matter, with less art" running through my head. In retrospect I'm not sure what this had to do with anything, except I still like that line because it sounds pretty neat. On that note, the word Artless has stuck because I like the sound of it. There's the obvious self-deprecating meaning too, of course. But artless has more than one definition.
1 : lacking art, knowledge, or skill : UNCULTURED an artless brute
2 a : made without skill : CRUDE an artless attempt to win votes b : free from artificiality : NATURAL artless grace
3 : free from guile or craft : sincerely simple an artless young woman
The title of this site comes from all of these meanings. Strangely, if there's one thing I'd like to come across as it's earnest.
This website was coded and designed by me, rather transparently. I chose a black and white color scheme because I thought it would let the art stand alone, as it were. The image of angels in the header comes from stock.xchng, a wonderful free stock photography site. The script that allows the fancy windows is Lightbox. I really struggled to find a way to display the images in the gallery without opening a new window or resorting to non standards-compliant coding, and the lightbox script was my compromise.
